The fun part is that me, my physiotherapist, and her colleague used to discuss the different flavors, combinations, and make others hungry.

What Are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats is a no cooking method for making oatmeal.

Instead of cooking the oats in hot water and serving hot, just soak the oats with cold milk, yogurt, chia seeds, sweetener, and a hint of salt.

In this method, the oats and chia seeds will absorb all the liquid and end up in a soft, creamy, cold, and thick textured uncooked oatmeal while you sleep, or within 6-8 hours. Top it with some fresh fruits, nuts, and seeds if you wish.

Basically, mix all the ingredients at night, wake up in the morning for a healthy  breakfast called Overnight Oats.

Tips For Making Overnight Oats

  • Old fashioned rolled oats work the best for this recipe. It gives the perfect texture to the overnight oats.
  • You can use any kind of milk. I like to use almond milk or low fat milk in this recipe.
  • I have used homemade yogurt, you can add greek yogurt or any dairy-free yogurt.
  • The best oats to liquid ratio is 1:1 – This means for each 1/2 cup of oats, you need ½ cup of milk.
  • For every 1 tbsp of chia seeds, you will need 2 tbsp of yogurt. I always add 2 tbsp of homemade yogurt in my recipe and the consistency always works the best for us. This means for every ½ cup of oats and 1 tbsp chia seeds add ½ cup of milk and 2 tbsp of thick yogurt.
  • You can add ground flaxseed, 1/2 tsp tukmaria seeds (holy basil seeds), or 1 tsp of chia seeds.
  • Most overnight oats recipes require you to add 1/4 cup yogurt. This will need you to add more sweetener in the recipe – between 2-3 tsp sweetener.
  • For a single serving: It’s easy to make overnight oats in a jar. In a jar stir all the ingredients together, place the jar in the fridge to soak up the liquid, add your favorite fruits, nuts, and seeds on the top.
  • For making a bigger batch: Just double/triple the recipe, mix all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl, cover it with a plastic wrap, and store in the refrigerator. On the next day, scoop out around 1 cup from the bowl into individual serving bowls and add some flavors like vanilla, coconut, almond extract, cocoa powder, nutmeg, cardamom, or cinnamon powder. Add your favorite toppings.
  • If you are planning to store them for 4 days. I don’t recommend adding fruits in overnight oats while soaking them. If you want to eat the oatmeal the very next day or within 6-8 hours, you can add the fruits while soaking the oats. By adding some fruits like mango, strawberry, blueberries, and mashed banana, you will need to add less sweetener in the recipe.
  • You can soak dried fruits or nuts in overnight oats like almonds, walnuts, raisins, craisins, dates, or figs.

How To Store Tropical Overnight Oats?

You can store tropical overnight oats in a sealed jar or in an airtight glass container for 4 days.

If you decide to add fruits in the overnight oats while soaking, you should consume them within 6-8 hours.

How To Serve Tropical Overnight Oats?

You can serve them right away once they are soaked for 6-8 hours.

Make them interesting by adding your favorite toppings.

I like to place them on the countertop for 15-20 minutes, add the topping before consuming them.

You can serve them warm, heat them in the microwave for 30-50 seconds, stirring in between.
