Vegan Black Bean Oat Burgers
The incredibly delicious, hearty, and healthy Vegan Black Bean Oat Burgers are super easy to make. These gluten free burger patties are made by using black beans, ground oats, veggies, and aromatic spices.
These plant based black bean oat patties are so flavorful and satisfying. The patties are protein rich and fulfilling. You can incorporate them in a rice bowl, salad, wraps, sandwiches, or burgers for a wholesome meal.
Black beans add some softness and creaminess in the patties. Colorful veggies like broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, and onions add some beautiful texture and crunch. The oat flour holds the patties beautifully without breaking them apart while cooking. Garlic cloves, cilantro, and lime add tons of flavors in the recipe.
Red chili powder, black pepper, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder add the right amount of kick to the black bean oat burgers.
I have used canned black beans but you can soak and cook them in an instant pot or pressure cooker as well. Black beans are high in fiber content and have potential to cause some discomfort, bloating, or gas. Soaking them helps break down the complex sugar and may help in reducing some discomfort. Rinsing the black beans a couple of times, soaking them in water for between 4-12 hours, and cooking them in freshwater potentially ease digestion.
To test out the recipe, I made a small batch of these patties. Me and my husband loved them so much that we made a very big batch of these incredible patties. I froze them and took them with me on my trip to my son’s place in Seattle. He enjoyed them so much and we made another batch at his home for him to enjoy later for the best black bean oat burgers or sandwiches.
We spent 3 weeks with my son who recently moved for work in Seattle. Enjoyed the beautiful city and incredible local food. We had been to incredible places like Snoqualmie Waterfalls, a beautiful Germantown – Leavenworth, Mount Rainier, and Olympic National Park.
We used to live in Vancouver, Canada 15 years back. We decided to travel there and relive our old days. Enjoyed the local food and places we used to go. We went to check out our apartment building and my son’s school. Met some of our old friends who are still living in the city. It was so much fun and felt very nostalgic.Â
After coming back home, we had a couple of gatherings and were very busy. Now you know why I have not posted any recipes on my blog for a long time.

Vegan Black Bean Oat Burgers Step By Step Recipe
Patties
Transfer the black beans into a colander, rinse, and set aside to drain out water from them.
In a blending jar, add the oats, grind them until they turn into a flour, and set aside.
Clean and rinse the broccoli florets and let them sit in the colander for 10 mins.
Chop the broccoli florets in a food processor or chopper and transfer them to a large mixing bowl.
Next, chop the carrot and garlic cloves into the food processor and transfer them to the bowl.
Cut some onions and transfer them to a mixing bowl.
Add some yellow bell peppers and cilantro to the bowl.
Roughly mash the black beans in a food processor or using a potato masher. Combine them with the veggies and add all the spices, salt, and lime juice.
Mix the veggies and beans together with your hands or a spatula.
Next, add some oat flour and keep binding the mixture together. Cover the bowl with a lid and let it sit in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Shaping The Patties
Brush the baking tray with ½ tbsp oil, and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 400℉/200℃
Take out the mixture from the refrigerator. Grease your hands with a few drops of oil, take some mixture to form into a round shape, and then press it to form a patty shape. Set the patty on a baking tray.
Repeat the process with the remaining mixture and make 16 patties out of it. Set all the patties on a baking tray without overcrowding them.
Brush some oil on top of each patty. Bake the patties for 15-17 minutes without disturbing them. Take out the pan from the oven and wait for 30-40 seconds before flipping them.
Gently flip each patty using a spatula. Bake the patties for another 5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Take them out of the oven and let them sit in the baking tray for 7-8 minutes.
Assemble The Burger
Warm up some burger buns, spread your favorite burger sauce – I have mixed some harissa mayonnaise on both sides of the bread. Add some lettuce or mixed greens followed by tomato slices.
Melt some cheese on the burger patty, transfer the patty on the top of tomato slices, and add some sautéed peppers and onions. Drizzle some more mayonnaise mixture. Cover the burger with the other side of the bun and enjoy!
Tips For Making Vegan Black Bean Oat Burgers?
- When it comes to making burgers, always remember to get rid of the excess moisture. Extra moisture causes the patty to break very easily while cooking.
- Drain the black beans very well before mashing them.
- Preheat the oven for 8 minutes before transferring the baking tray for cooking the black bean burger patties.
- Let the patties cook for about 15-17 minutes without disturbing them. Take them out of the oven and let them sit in the pan for 30-40 seconds. After that carefully flip each patty or it might break when it is too hot.
Variations
- Instead of canned beans, you can soak 1 cup black beans, and cook them in the instant pot for 10 minutes on high pressure.
- You can use additional veggies like green peas, corn, or boiled potatoes in the recipe.
- 1.5 cup readymade oat flour can be used instead of grinding the oats into the powder.
- You may use 1 cup rice flour instead of oat flour in the recipe.
- You can cook the patties on a stove top in a large skillet but do not add more than 4-5 patties at a time. Heat the skillet on medium high heat and lower the temperature to medium low. Brush some oil to the pan, transfer the patties and let them cook for about 7-8 minutes without disturbing them. Gently flip the patty with 2 spatulas and cook the other side for about 4-5 minutes.
How To Store Vegan Black Bean Oat Burger Patties?
Store the black bean oat patties in an airtight container for 4-5 days in a refrigerator.
They can be easily stored in a freezer safe container for 3 months. Take the required patties and reheat them in an oven or on a stove top on a skillet.
How To Serve Vegan Black Bean Oat Burgers?
Serve the black bean oat burgers with my homemade burger buns or wheat and oat buns.
Baked sweet potato fries or oven roasted asparagus goes perfect as a side dish with these beautiful black bean oat burgers.
Serve some hot soup like roasted bell pepper tomato soup, creamy vegetable soup, or beetroot tomato soup. These soup flavors go pretty well with these burgers.
Serve the patties in a rice bowl or wraps by adding some avocado crema, mayonnaise, lettuce, stir fried veggies, and some cheese.
Enjoy these black bean oat burger patties in a multigrain slice bread for incredible and fulfilling sandwiches.
